When you live in the only place where the earth is black, you have one possible name for the village: Black Earth. Black Earth gained its natural beauty 10,000 years ago. The movement of the glaciers left behind a rich soil, rocky bluffs, meandering valleys and spring-fed creeks. Black Earth Creek, which is fed by the Garfoot, Vermont, Spring Valley and Blue Mounds creeks, was made a Priority Watershed not long after it was named one of the top 100 trout streams in North America. Black Earth, along with Cross Plains and Mazomanie, make up the region known as the Gateway to the Driftless. Offering an affordable lifestyle, the Gateway to the Driftless prides itself on an abundance of outdoor recreation, a rich natural heritage, a special spirit of place, a small-town quality of life, and a business-friendly attitude to all who visit, live or work in the area.
